How to take a screenshot

A screenshot is a picture of whatever is currently on your screen. It's helpful when you need to share an error message, show what you're seeing, or save something for reference.


Windows

Capture the Entire Screen

  1. Press the Print Screen key on your keyboard (it may be labeled PrtScn).
  2. Open an app like Paint, Word, or an email.
  3. Press Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot.
  4. Save or send from there.
  1. Press Windows + Shift + S.
  2. Your screen will dim and a small toolbar will appear at the top.
  3. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.
  4. The screenshot is copied to your clipboard. Press Ctrl + V to paste it into an email, document, or chat.

Tip: After you take the screenshot, a notification may appear in the bottom-right corner. Click it to open the Snipping Tool, where you can annotate or save the image.


Mac

Capture the Entire Screen

  1. Press Cmd + Shift + 3.
  2. The screenshot will be saved as a file on your desktop.
  1. Press Cmd + Shift + 4.
  2. Your cursor will turn into a crosshair.
  3. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.
  4. The screenshot will be saved as a file on your desktop.

Capture a Single Window

  1. Press Cmd + Shift + 4, then press the Spacebar.
  2. Your cursor will turn into a camera icon.
  3. Click on the window you want to capture.
  4. The screenshot will be saved as a file on your desktop.

Chromebook

Capture the Entire Screen

  1. Press Ctrl + Show Windows (the Show Windows key looks like a rectangle with two lines beside it, on the top row of your keyboard).
  2. The screenshot will be saved to your Downloads folder.

Capture a Specific Area

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Show Windows.
  2. Click and drag to select the area you want to capture.
  3. The screenshot will be saved to your Downloads folder.

iPhone / iPad

iPhone (Face ID) or Newer iPad

  1. Press the Side button and the Volume Up button at the same time.
  2. A preview will appear in the bottom-left corner. Tap it to edit or share, or wait for it to disappear — it will save to your Photos automatically.

iPhone (Home Button)

  1. Press the Home button and the Side button (or Top button) at the same time.
  2. A preview will appear in the bottom-left corner.

Android

  1. Press the Power button and the Volume Down button at the same time.
  2. Hold both for about one second until the screen flashes.
  3. The screenshot will be saved to your Photos or Gallery app.

Note: On some Android devices, the steps may vary slightly. If this doesn't work, try pressing and holding the Power button and tapping Screenshot from the menu that appears.


Tips

  • Most screenshots are saved as image files (.png). You can attach them to emails, paste them into documents, or upload them to support tickets.
  • If you need to highlight or mark up a screenshot, most devices have a built-in editing tool that appears right after you take one.
