Getting Started with Passkeys

Passkeys replace your password with a secure credential stored on your device. Instead of typing a password, you authenticate with your fingerprint, face, or device PIN.

Supported Platforms

macOS

Minimum version: macOS 13 Ventura — Apple passkey security overview

Required settings:

• iCloud Keychain must be enabled: System Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Passwords & Keychain → On
• Two-factor authentication must be enabled on your Apple ID
• Your Mac must be signed into iCloud

Supported browsers: Safari 16+, Chrome 108+, Edge 108+, Firefox 122+

Windows

Minimum version: Windows 11 22H2 (with KB5030310) for the full native passkey experience — Microsoft passkey documentation

Note: Windows 10 users can use passkeys in Chrome or Edge, but the built-in Windows passkey manager requires Windows 11 22H2 or later.

Required settings:

• Windows Hello must be configured: Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options
• Set up at least one of: fingerprint, face recognition, or PIN
• A PIN is the minimum requirement — biometrics are optional but recommended

Supported browsers: Chrome 108+, Edge 108+, Firefox 122+

iPhone / iPad

Minimum version: iOS/iPadOS 16 — Use passkeys on iPhone

Required settings:

• iCloud Keychain enabled: System Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Passwords & Keychain → On
• Two-factor authentication must be enabled on your Apple ID (this is the key requirement)
• Device passcode set

Supported browsers: Safari 16+, Chrome for iOS, Firefox for iOS

Android

Minimum version: Android 9 — Sign in with passkeys on Android

Required settings:

• Screen lock set (PIN, pattern, password, or biometric) — this is the core requirement
• Google Password Manager is enabled by default; on Android 14+ you can switch to a third-party manager (see below)
• To verify or change your passkey provider: Settings → Passwords, passkeys & accounts

Supported browsers: Chrome 108+, Firefox 122+

Linux

Passkey support on Linux is limited. Chrome 108+ and Firefox 122+ support device-bound passkeys, but synced passkeys (via iCloud/Google) are not natively available. A hardware security key (FIDO2-compatible, e.g. YubiKey) can be used instead, or a third-party password manager with browser extension support (see below).

Third-Party Password Managers

If you use a password manager other than iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager, many now support passkeys natively. Setup varies by app and platform.

1Password

Minimum version: 1Password 8, with additional platform requirements — 1Password passkey support | System requirements

• iOS 18 or later
• Android 14 or later
• Windows 11 22H2 or later

Setup:

1. Ensure 1Password is installed and you are signed in
2. Install the 1Password browser extension — passkey support in browsers requires the extension, not just the desktop app
3. When a passkey prompt appears in your browser, 1Password will offer to save it automatically
4. On mobile, enable 1Password as a passkey provider:

• iOS 18+: Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords → enable 1Password
• Android 14+: Settings → Passwords, passkeys & accounts → enable 1Password

Bitwarden

Bitwarden added passkey support in its browser extension in late 2023. — Bitwarden passkey docs Mobile passkey support (as a provider) became available in May 2024.

Setup:

1. Install the Bitwarden browser extension and ensure it is up to date
2. The extension handles passkey prompts automatically once logged in
3. On mobile (requires iOS 17+ or Android 14+):

• iOS 18+: Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords → enable Bitwarden
• iOS 17: Settings → Passwords → Password Options → enable Bitwarden
• Android 14+: Settings → Passwords, passkeys & accounts → enable Bitwarden

Dashlane

Dashlane has supported passkeys since 2022, via both the browser extension and mobile apps. — Dashlane passkey docs

Setup:

1. Install the Dashlane browser extension and keep it up to date
2. Passkeys are created and filled automatically through the extension
3. On mobile, enable Dashlane as a passkey provider:

• iOS 18+: Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords → enable Dashlane
• iOS 17: Settings → Passwords → Password Options → enable Dashlane
• Android 14+: Settings → Passwords, passkeys & accounts → enable Dashlane

General Notes for Third-Party Managers

• Browser extension is required on desktop for all third-party managers — the desktop app alone is not sufficient
• If both iCloud Keychain and a third-party manager are active, your browser may ask which to use; select your preferred manager from the prompt
• Passkeys created in one manager cannot be transferred to another — if you switch managers, you will need to create a new passkey
• On iOS, only one passkey provider can be set as the default at a time
• On Android, switching providers requires Android 14 or later; older versions always use Google Password Manager

Troubleshooting Common Issues

“Your device doesn’t support passkeys”

Check that your OS and browser meet the minimum versions above. On mobile, update via your device’s app store and system settings.

“Passkey not found” on a new device

Passkeys sync through iCloud Keychain (Apple), Google Password Manager (Android/Chrome), or your third-party password manager’s account. Sign into the same account you used when creating the passkey and ensure sync is enabled.

Passkey prompt never appears

• Confirm your browser is up to date
• Confirm your password manager’s browser extension is installed and unlocked
• Disable other extensions temporarily — conflicts between multiple password managers are common
• Try a private/incognito window to rule out extension conflicts

iCloud Keychain won’t enable

Two-factor authentication on your Apple ID is required. Enable it at appleid.apple.com → Sign-In and Security → Two-Factor Authentication.

Windows Hello PIN option is missing

Your organization’s IT policy may restrict Windows Hello. Contact your IT administrator if the option is grayed out in Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.

1Password/Bitwarden extension not intercepting the passkey prompt

Make sure the extension is unlocked before attempting to sign in. A locked extension will not respond to passkey prompts.

Using a Hardware Security Key

If your device doesn’t support passkeys natively, a FIDO2 security key (such as a YubiKey 5 series or Google Titan Key) works as an alternative on all platforms. Insert or tap the key when prompted.
